Our Design Build Process

The Backwoods Design Build Company follows a two-step contractual process for all of our projects. The first is the design phase, the second is the construction or build phase. The design phase of a project is where we work together to put the project parameters in place, this phase has its own contract separate from the construction phase and contract. Based on the scope of your project this could mean that we land on the perfect new layout for your existing space and we could select interior finished materials like cabinetry and flooring. If the scope is a new construction project or addition, we will collaborate on the perfect design of your dream home and work through the construction documents. Every project is unique in its scope, and the design phase looks a little different each time based on our client’s needs. After the design phase is complete our goal is to be in a position to responsibly estimate the cost of the scoped project and present a construction contract.

The construction contract signing is the beginning of the second phase. During the construction phase we are again your one point of contact throughout the rest of the project. We will communicate during the pre-construction and construction phases, work through finalizing client selections, and nail down details as they come into the project timeline as determined through continual project management. The construction process is heavily reliant on planning and communication, we are there to manage and support all aspects of bringing your dream home into reality. Getting your Project Started

Step 1: The first step is to contact us and we will talk about your dream project! As a potential client, you will already have some things in mind that we will want to hear all about; for example the space to be remodeled or renovated, additions desired and purpose, or your new home or out-building location and parameters. We will also need to talk about budget and what funding you have available to spend on your project (read more about cost estimating and budget discussions here).

Step 2: The second step it to schedule a program meeting. If we decide together during the initial conversation to move forward in the process, we will want to meet with you at your project location to see the space, whether it’s vacant land or an existing home. We will walk through your project ideas with you and take lots of notes and possibly some photos. We will talk a lot about your vision, pain points in your space as it is, and desired functionality. Don’t be shy and be sure to share all of your ideas with us so we get to know you and gain inspiration toward creating a special space just for you. We will work together to design your dream, no matter how big or small the project is.

Step 3: The third step will be the presentation of our design contract. This contract will outline the scope of the design, the design process, and design fees. Remember every project is unique onto itself, so fees vary according to scope even during the design phase.

Step 4: After the design process is complete and it has been determined that our Company and our design client are a good fit for each other, we will present a construction contract.
